Castletown to Balladoole (and back!) - Coastal loop walk full of Heritage

summary:

Starting off in the historical ancient capital of the Isle of Man, you make you way along the Island's Southern coastal paths (Raad ny Foillan), seeing heritage sites along the way, before turning off to the main destination of the walk "balladoole" (A Viking burial and Iron age fort). The walk then loops back to the main road and takes you back to Castletown centre past some more interesting little spots.

Bartholomew's Chapel

Close Ny Chollag Promontory Fort

Balladoole Viking Ship Burial site

Southern 100 start/finish line and campsite

Terrain:

Quite flat but has uneven terrain and mud in places. Not accessible for wheelchair users.



Route:

Begin at Scarlett in Castletown. You can park at the car park in Scarlett itself or travel to Castletown square and make your way to the Scarlett Discovery centre on foot.

Follow the coastal path until you reach Pooil Vaaish road and take Pooil Vaaish for

Head along to Balladoole and take a detour to have a look at the site

Then you can take the main road back to Castletown

When you get to Castletown, cut into Arbory Road and take it all the way back into town through the historical streets.

You'll pass the Southern 100 paddock area, the old Mills, CRHS and head back into town.
